US-based 501c3 nonprofits spring up every day, and unfortunately many close up shop as well.
There are many great directories of nonprofits, including some great ratings organizations such as Charity Navigator, Guidestar / Candid and CharityWatch. Nonprofit Registry is operated by Giving Forward, also a 501c3, with a mission of helping nonprofits generate donation revenue via non-traditionally means, including cause marketing powered publishing, hybrid events, and philanthropic sweepstakes.
To accomplish that mission, we need both great nonprofit data and a relationship with those nonprofits we serve. That’s why we decided to make our proprietary nonprofit data accessible to all AND invite nonprofits and others to help personalize the nonprofit profiles.
Think about Nonprofit Registry as a LinkedIn for Nonprofits (US-based to start with).
As you might expect, nonprofits come in many sizes and categories, and the a categorization schema has been developed which works fairly well. The NTEE (National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities) Classification System was developed by The National Center for Charitable Statistics, part of the Urban Institute. That taxonomy is just one of the ways we will organize and make nonprofits searchable.
We’ll also have our team of volunteers interview selected nonprofit leaders to have them share their mission statements via Zoom interviews. Sometimes the personal touch is important.
